Dr. Kostikas is a Respiratory Physician trained in the University of Athens Medical School and the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK. He completed his PhD on Markers on Exhaled Air in Patients with Inflammatory Airways Diseases at the University of Athens in 2005. He practised Respiratory Medicine from 2004 until 2014 in Academic settings (University of Thessaly and Athens Medical Schools, Greece) and in private practice. I have been involved in the teaching of medical students in the past 15 years in the Universities of Thessaly, Athens and Ioannina.

The research activities of Dr. Kostikas focus on asthma and COPD, with special interest in the study of biomarkers (including blood eosinophils and FeNO), phenotyping, comorbidities and exacerbations. He has supported the development and conduct of randomized controlled trials and supported analyses for the improvement of our understanding of characteristics of exacerbating COPD patients and the role of biomarkers (including blood eosinophils) and patient-reported outcomes in the natural course of the disease.

Dr. Kostikas has more than 190 publications in peer-reviewed journals in PubMed (with >3,700 citations and h-index 33 in Scopus) and has several contributions to medical textbooks in the Greek and English language. He has participated in the Task Forces of ERS and EAACI on biomarkers in airways diseases. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and PLoS One and reviewer in more than 50 peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) Assembly since 2019.

Dr. Kostikas is the founder and administrator of the educational Facebook group “What is New in Respiratory Medicine” with more than 5,500 members worldwide focusing on new developments in Respiratory Medicine.

Dr. Kostikas has been involved in several posts of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) (e-Learning Resources Director, member of the HERMES examination committee for the European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine and member of the European Board for Accreditation for Pneumology). He worked for Novartis Pharma AG in Basel, Switzerland, between 2015 and 2018, as Medical Head Respiratory Region Europe, and subsequently WorldWide Brand Medical Director Respiratory, responsible for the inhaled and COPD Portfolio.

Dr. Kostikas is currently an Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Ioannina and Head of the Respiratory Medicine Department of the University Hospital of Ioannina in Greece.
