We are currently seeking candidates to fill an exciting position as a Data Manager in the field of health services research and join our rapidly growing team at Optimum Patient Care (OPC) based in Cambridge. In this role, data services are provided to sister company Observational and Pragmatic Research Institute (OPRI) and other external clients. This is a fantastic opportunity to further your experience within an internationally recognised research organisation involved in the analysis and dissemination of data from large-scale, clinical databases and randomised controlled trials.

Our research follows 3 main directions:

  • Pragmatic clinical studies in primary care
  • Improving clinical care in chronic respiratory disease
  • Setting and improving research methods and standards, and nurturing international research collaborations


Key responsibilities:

With a real passion for data analysis & quantitative research, the Data Manager will lead the data team and work alongside the research team on the analytical requirements necessary to provide key insights into large clinical datasets. Using their experience and knowledge of data modelling, the Data Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Driving process improvements and taking feeds from multiple sources and managing the ETL process into the data warehouses
  • Ensuring that all data contained is accurate, up to date and complete
  • Ensure the research teams are provided with the data, in a timely manner
  • Development of standardised reporting and data validation processes
  • Keeping up to date with current techniques and developments
  • Develop a technical strategy and advise the executive
  • Responsible for the design and creation of data reports and reporting tools to support the team’s reporting needs and decision making. Requires utilising the various systems and tools to create reports, charts and dashboards that enable business and researchers overview on the data
  • Regulatory framework management activity
  • Provide metrics to the executive about the data team’s performance and plan strategic projects
  • Support team members on data issues and problem resolution


Qualifications & Skills:

Essential Experience:

  • Exceptional analytical ability using SQL and multiple Relational Database Management Systems as well as a deep understanding of data warehouse models (both Inmon and Kimball)
  • Solid (at least 5 years) data analysis experience using large datasets (100’s of millions of rows) and a demonstrable ability to manipulate data and critically analyse the outputs
  • Ability to adhere to quality procedures for analysis and to investigate anomalies and proactively develop and implement solutions
  • Able to work within a fast-paced environment with quickly changing priorities
  • Analytical mind and excellent attention to detail
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal) in English and teamwork capability
  • Team and project management experience

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in MySQL
  • Experience or knowledge of SAS or SPSS
  • Background in clinical research
  • Experience working with:
  • NHS UK Read Codes v2 and v3 and Snomed CT
  • WHO medical coding dictionaries
  • MedDRA drug dictionaries
